Try These Typical Dutch Treats….!
Two thin waffles stuck together by a layer of syrup. Our sweetest Dutch treat! Tip: the best way to eat them are from a street market or bakery, so you enjoy them hot, fresh and gooey!
2| Raw Herring
Raw herring may sound a little scary and weird, but it is one of the most normal and typical Dutch things to eat for us. This speciality is served all over the city, just ask for a ‘broodje haring’, and get the raw fish served in a small sandwich with pickles and onions. Yummie!
We eat these ‘oil balls’ around New Year’s Eve, usually with a glass of champagne in the other hand. They are deep fried sweet dumplings, dusted in powdered sugar. Sometimes they also contain little fruit pieces. I can tell you… they are the best, can’t wait for December to come!
The Netherlands are, of course, famous because of the cheese. Cheese is big business in the Netherlands, so don’t go home without visiting one of Amsterdam’s many ‘kaas’ shops or markets and tasting some Gouda, Geitenkaas or Maasdammer. Oh, en don’t forget to try our own cheese table every evening at Banks Mansion!
